Message from the Head of School

Next week, we will celebrate Thanksgiving with friends and family. We anticipate this annual holiday as a way of giving thanks, enjoying a wonderful meal, and showing appreciation for what we have.

As Jews, we wake up every morning, renew our souls, and give thanks to G-d on a personal level as we recite Modeh Ani. Jewish scripture states that gratitude is the essence of life. Thus, upon wakening from sleep, we say Modeh Ani. The Midrash (Bereshis Rabbah 14:11) says, "...for every single breath we take, we should express our thanks to G-d for the gift of life."

As you gather around your Thanksgiving tables this week, take a moment to be grateful for what you have, and to be guided by your Jewish values on a daily basis.

Shabbat Shalom,
Karen Feller
Head of School

Lower School Highlights

By Mrs. Shelley Katz and Mrs. Nitza Hartung
Lower School Judaic Studies Teachers

Third-grade Judaic Studies classes presented Mi’Dor L’Dor projects, which were received with enthusiasm and interest. Students displayed their family’s treasures and Jewish heirlooms with pride. In order to expand and enrich students' knowledge and experience of the theme of Mi’Dor L’Dor, parents and grandparents were invited to come to their child’s class and explain in person their connection/history of a family heirloom or an interesting Jewish experience. This is a wonderful third-grade learning experience that teaches the children about our traditions and heritage.

NJHS Introduces the Triangles of Truth Program
By Middle School Guidance Counselor Sydney Siegal

After learning about the Triangles of Truth program from National Junior Honor Society member Emily Firestone, the DKJA chapter of the NJHS decided to adopt this important cause as one of its community service projects for the year. Now you can be a part of it, too. By buying a triangle for $1.00, you will accomplish two goals. First, you will honor a Holocaust victim by displaying his or her name respectfully. Second, by purchasing a triangle, you will be working to stop genocide in Darfur today. We hope to prove that we have learned from the lessons of the Holocaust and use our knowledge to prevent present-day and future genocide. Each triangle purchased will be displayed around the school to show support of this great cause. Triangles can be purchased in the School Office during after-school candy sales and from any NJHS member. All proceeds will benefit the Save Darfur Coalition and the Genocide Intervention Network

Artists' Creativity on Display
By Carol Routman, Middle School Art Teacher

Three amazing MTM parent volunteer docents and one very enthusiastic writing teacher combined to make Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture come alive! Docents Marianne Altschul, Dara Salama, and Gail Cohen hit the perfect chord in Mrs. Ostrow’s fifth-grade English class when they presented the amazing buildings designed 100 years ago by Frank Lloyd Wright. For an extra credit assignment, students were asked to plan and execute a 3-D model of a Frank Lloyd Wrigt building. Their amazing work is on display right outside the fifth-grade classrooms. Note the cantilevers, modern design, and attention to including nature in the design plans! Kudos to all!

High School Highlights
-
Coffeehouse
Last night’s Coffeehouse was a great success. Students and faculty presented thirteen acts that included dance, music, and comedy. There was a full house of parents, faculty, staff and alumni joining in this celebration of the talent of our students.

American Government and the Community
The students in Mr. Talerico’s American Government class were given the opportunity to go "outside" of the classroom to learn how local government works. The students were assigned a project that requires them to think of a problem within their city limits, and then contact the commissioners of their respective cities about the problem they chose. The problems varied from issues concerning traffic lights to the overabundance of iguanas in Boca Raton. Seniors Aliza Bresnick (shown at left with Mr. Talerico)  and Zach Herbert received quick replies stating that their concerns regarding two traffic lights in Boca Raton will be immediately attended to, and they were also given thanks by their commissioners for taking an active role concerning their city and their city’s government. By giving them the chance to see how the political process really operates, DJKA students have moved another step closer to becoming mature, productive adults in their communities. Proudly, they have the knowledge and motivation necessary to remedy any future problems in their cities.
